We produce high-quality fullerene nanoparticles at your disposal

We make sure we provide customers wishing to buy C60 fullerene or its other variants and derivatives with only the highest quality material. Carefully monitored, meticulous production of fullerene is being done via a carbon arc discharge method, after which a number of additional steps follow. Everything is done in the following manner:

  • First, graphite electrodes are vaporised in a low pressure helium atmosphere by passing an electric current through them. Thus an arc is created, which results in the formation of fullerene-containing soot.
  • The fullerenes are separated from the rest of the soot.
  • Individual molecules are further separated from each other and we’re left with pure material, e. g. C60 or C70.
  • Then we proceed to synthesise any eventual derivatives, typically by an organic synthesis
  • Followed by any eventual post-processing (dispersion into matrix, etc.)

We offer fullerenes of a different purity degree, as well as their mixtures. Including 99,9% pure C60 for experimental purposes. Take your pick!

What about fullerene solubility?

The solubility of standard C60 and C70 fullerenes is generally rather low. 1-chloronaphtalene yields the best results in terms of solubility, with one litre dissolving 51 g of C60. The other efficient solvents include carbon disulphide, toluene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, or p-xylene. C60 solutions are characterised by their purple colour, while C70 solutions are reddish-brown in appearance. While basic C60 and C70 are not renowned for their solubility, there are many fullerene derivatives available that are much more efficient in that regard.

There are multiple ways to create fullerene-polymers

When subjected to extreme pressure and temperature, fullerene molecules are capable of forming two or three dimensional polymers. There are also ways of creating single-strand polymers, and a whole range of organic reactions that are useful in fullerene polymerisation.

Fullerene’s antioxidant qualities make it a prospective substance for medicine and cosmetics

Due to many conjugated double bonds, fullerenes can boast a high electron affinity. Thanks to this, they are able to easily react with radicals, preventing chain reactions that are potentially damaging to organic cells. It’s not surprise both the cosmetic industry and the medicine sector have recently taken a heightened interest in fullerenes, the latter also for its considerable antiviral properties.

Improving fullerene water solubility is an open challenge

As pure fullerene is hydrophobic, a great deal of effort is dedicated to improving its solubility in water with adding hydrophilic polar groups. The research is still ongoing and there’s not a flawless solution so far. Once such a solution is discovered a plethora of new uses of this material will open!

Bulk fullerenes are the basis of some of the strongest materials on earth

With a high-pressure, high-temperature treatment of fullerite (bulk solid, crystallic form of fullerenes), an ultra-durable material in can be formed, exceeding diamond in hardness. This ultra-hard fullerite counts among the strongest material yet discovered.

The sky is the limit when it comes to the use of nanoparticles. Whether you’re interested in them theoretically, or need them for a specific use, we can offer the highest-quality material out there. Make your purchase!
